Marking Sacred Time in Community

הַחֹ֧דֶשׁ הַזֶּ֛ה לָכֶ֖ם רֹ֣אשׁ חֳדָשִׁ֑ים רִאשׁ֥וֹן הוּא֙ לָכֶ֔ם לְחׇדְשֵׁ֖י הַשָּׁנָֽה “This month shall be for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you.” — Exodus 12:2

At Broward Central Synagogue, we believe that the Jewish people live through the sacred rhythm of our festivals. The very first commandment God gave the Israelites after leaving Egypt was to sanctify time, to build a calendar that keeps our faith and our identity alive.

We celebrate that rhythm across all our campuses, ensuring that every festival, major or minor, ancient or modern, is experienced in meaningful, joyful and inclusive ways. Throughout the year, each holiday is accompanied by services and activities for adults, children and families, making Jewish time come alive for all generations.

The Jewish Year at Broward Central Synagogue

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur

We begin the year with uplifting services held at both campuses, offering meaningful worship for adults along with children’s services and babysitting for all ages. These days of awe bring our entire community together in reflection, prayer and renewal.

Sukkot

Under the stars and among the palm branches, families and children enjoy hands-on activities and festive gatherings in the sukkah. Teens share creative programs, and adults join in our spirited lulav and l’chayim celebration.

Simchat Torah

Every year, we rejoice as a community with a grand celebration, dancing with the Torah, unrolling it from beginning to end and celebrating with hundreds of people in song and joy.

Hanukkah

During the entire week of Hanukkah, no day goes by without light and activity. Each campus hosts joyful gatherings, candlelightings and community events. Adults enjoy our popular “Latkes and Vodkas” evening, festive, delicious and full of laughter.

Tu BiShvat and Lag BaOmer

For Tu BiShvat, we celebrate the "New Year of the Trees" through environmental and family-friendly programs. For Lag BaOmer, we gather outdoors for a family bonfire event, music and celebration, bringing warmth and togetherness to the community.

Purim

A favorite for all ages! Children enjoy our Purim carnival filled with costumes, games and laughter, while adults gather in the evening for our legendary “Megillah and Tequila” celebration, a night of joy and community spirit.

Pesach (Passover)

Alongside our festival services, we hold community s’darim, including a lively “Second Night Seder” that brings together members and guests to retell our people’s story of freedom.

Shavout

We celebrate the giving of the Torah with a Tikkun Leil Shavuot, an evening of learning for all ages, each year featuring a new theme that deepens our understanding of Torah and Jewish life.

Yom HaShoah, Yom HaZikaron and Yom HaAtzma-ut

We come together to remember and to celebrate as we mourn on Yom HaShoah and Yom HaZikaron and rejoice on Yom HaAtzma-ut, where Zionism and love for Israel are at the heart of our community. Each year, we host moving ceremonies and festive programs that strengthen our bond with Am Yisrael (people of Israel) and Medinat Yisrael (state of Israel).

Summer Reflections
Tisha B’Av and Days of Remembrance

During the summer, we observe Tishah B’Av with a traditional evening service, incorporating reflections on more recent tragedies in Jewish history.
